Amidst political unrest and escalating violence, Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, embraces a four-day jazz festival, PapJazz, offering a musical escape and showcasing resilience through cultural expression in challenging times.
A Resilient Celebration in Troubled Times
In a striking contrast to the backdrop of escalating violence and political upheaval, Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, is set to host the 17th edition of the PapJazz International Festival. This renowned event, shortened from eight to four days this year due to the ongoing crisis, is a testament to Haiti’s enduring spirit and unyielding commitment to cultural celebration, even in the most challenging times.
Haiti, grappling with dire economic and social conditions, has seen a dramatic surge in violence. According to a recent report by the UN Secretary-General to the Security Council, 2023 marked a disturbing escalation, with homicides doubling from the previous year (4,789 violent deaths compared to 2,183) and kidnappings increasing by 83%, from 1,359 to 2,490. In addition, the prevalence of rape and robbery, fueled by armed gangs that exert control over large parts of Port-au-Prince, has forced thousands to flee their homes, either becoming internally displaced or leaving the country.
A Beacon of Hope Amidst Chaos
Amidst this chaos and insecurity, the PapJazz Festival emerges as a beacon of hope and resilience. For four days, Port-au-Prince will transform into a hub for jazz enthusiasts from across Haiti and beyond, eager to immerse themselves in music’s soothing and unifying power. The festival will feature an array of local jazz artists and international musicians from Mexico, Cuba, Europe, and Africa, reflecting the global appeal and inclusive nature of jazz.
The festival will kick off with a performance by Spanish musician Abe Rábade, followed by Haitian artist Beethova Obas and Grammy-winning Cameroonian Richard Bona. The subsequent days will see performances by the Mexican Jerónimo Quintet, French Cyrille Aimée, Haitian bands Gwolobo, Erol Josué, Kanis, and Martinican Ludovic Louis. The event will conclude with Cuban Ruy López Nussa and Haitians Joël Akoustik and Kaï, alongside the Jazz Lakay Project, which brings together local jazz musicians to create original pieces.

Organized by the Haiti Jazz Foundation and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Communication, PapJazz returns to Port-au-Prince after being held in Cap-Haïtien in 2023. The festival’s agenda includes workshops for young musicians and children, film screenings, and even an environmental awareness day, among other activities.
The festival is supported by various companies and institutions, including the Bank of the Republic of Haiti and embassies from Spain, France, Mexico, Canada, the United States, and the European Union. This wide range of support underscores the festival’s importance as a cultural anchor and a symbol of international solidarity with Haiti.
