Talking about soccer rivalries at the national team level gives us an interesting list of clashes, of which Brazil and Argentina are almost par excellence the focus of attention . They are two soccer powers houses that from the beginning have known how to dominate each tournament in which they participate, especially when we refer to the Copa América. In fact, since it was called the South American Championship until today, this crossing is the one that has been repeated the most over the years.
The first duel between Brazil and Argentina dates from 1914, in a friendly match that ended in a 3-0 win for the albiceleste . However, it was a 1-1 draw that resulted from the first confrontation between both in the South American Championship, in 1916. For the following editions (1917 and 1918), Argentina was left with the first victory, while Brazil did the same a year later.

As the years passed, the tournament began to undergo modifications in terms of its organization, in addition to the fact that little by little more teams were added. Precisely, in the midst of this evolution, things began to change for both teams, because while it was called the South American Championship, the hegemony was for Argentina, leaving a record of 13 victories, 3 draws and 3 defeats . Once the Copa América era began, Brazil has dominated with 7 wins, 5 draws and 2 losses , waiting for what happens in 2021.
When reviewing the oldest duels between Brazil and Argentina by the cup, we find a very particular one, the one carried out in 1937. Although the format was a league where six teams participated, both ended up tied in first place with the same number of points, situation that forced an extra game. After 90 minutes and a scoreboard that did not move, Argentina won 2-0 with a double from Vicente de la Mata . The first time they played a "final" in this contest it happened thanks to a tiebreaker.
Biggest wins
Beating your classic rival is one of the moments that soccer fans relish the most. In the Copa América there have been no exceptions, and both the Canarinha and the Albiceleste have had their respective matches where they had no mercy on the court in front of their opponent. Although most of these confrontations tend to end with little bulky scpres, both teams have managed to achieve goals that in the end were historic.
Under the format of the South American Championship, Argentina was a true soccer machine and on a couple of occasions it achieved crushing 4-1 victories. In the 1925 edition, where they were just champions, they relied on a Manuel Seoane hattrick to get those three important points. For 1959 they repeated the feat and it was thanks to another triplet of goals, this time from José Sanfilippo. For their part, Brazil managed to beat them 3-0 in the 2007 final with the participation of Julio Baptista, Dani Alves and an own goal by Roberto Ayala .
Showdowns in finals
If the simple fact of watching Brazil and Argentina play a game brings with it a lot of curiosity because of what they represent, seeing them play a final increases emotions exponentially . The Copa América is the oldest tournament and due to format reasons, they have only seen each other twice in the decisive clash, always having the same protagonist lifting the trophy: Brazil. It is worth remembering that in 1937 they had to define the league with a playoff game, where the albiceleste triumphed.
The Copa América held in Peru in 2004 had both teams with the same performance in the group stage. After working hard to win in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Brazil and Argentina experienced their first final of the tournament. A goal from Adriano in 90 + 3 'equaled two a match that seemed to have the albiceleste in his pocket . Luck in the penalty shootout was on the side of the canarinha, who triumphed 4-2 to win their seventh title.
Fate and soccer brought them together again on the same stage three years later, only this time it would not be in Lima but in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela. For this edition, Argentina reached the final by winning all its matches and displaying the best skills of the event. However, Brazil managed to annul that team in 40 minutes. A goal from Baptista after four minutes gave them confidence , and after Ayala's own goal everything was sentenced, awaiting the goal from Alves that certified the eighth trophy in its history.
