Recently, the International Athletics World Championship ended, where the undisputed champion was the United States, which took a grand total of 33 medals. It was a highly anticipated competition, since it was held for the first time on American soil, and 2 years had passed since the World Cup could be held, due to the coronavirus pandemic. With a total of 13 new records, it was an edition hard to forget.

What were the countries that stood out the most in this competition? Here we tell you.

United States: 33 medals.

Without a doubt, the superpower blew away the competition this time around. The North Americans won 13 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze medals, having the advantage of competing at home. It was the best performance the country has had in this competition. Among some of its notable athletes is Sydney McLaughlin, who again broke his own world record in the 400 m hurdles. McLaughlin finished with a time of 50.68 seconds, lowering his own record by 0.73 seconds.

Ethiopia: 10 medals

With 4 gold, 4 silver and two bronze medals, this country ranked second in the World Cup. One of its outstanding athletes was Gotytom Gebreslase, who broke the championship record in the Women's Marathon. The 27-year-old finished with a time of 2:18:11 in the race held in Oregon.

Jamaica: 10 medals

Jamaica was third in this competition, collecting a total of 2 gold, 7 silver and 1 bronze medals. The most outstanding athlete in the delegation from this country was Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who won a gold medal in the 100 m event and two silver medals in the 200 m and in the 4 x 100 m race. In particular, he highlighted his 100 m test, a race that finished in 10.67 seconds.

Kenya: 10 medals

Finally, among the 4 most outstanding countries in the competition was Kenya, with 2 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. Its most outstanding athlete was Emmanuel Korir, who won his first gold medal in the men's 800 meters. Korir finished with a time of 1:43.71. Unfortunately, Kenya was unable to defend the other three gold medals she had won in the last edition of this event.

How did the Latin countries do?

Latin America, unfortunately, did not have much to show this time at the World Championships in Athletics. The only country that accumulated 2 gold medals was Peru (both medals by Kimberly García) and the others were far behind. Brazil had a gold medal in the 400 m hurdles and a bronze in the long jump, while Venezuela only won a gold medal, from Yulimar Rojas, in the triple jump.

The next World Championships in Athletics will be held in Budapest, Hungary. What new records will we see broken?
