Recently, Sanders, senator for the state of Vermont, announced his aspiration for the Democratic Party nomination defined in the primary elections, after having lost to Hillary Clinton in the same race during 2016.

A democratic socialist

With 77 years, of which he has dedicated 50 to politics, Bernie Sanders seeks the presidency of the United States with the purpose of revolutionizing the economic and social perspective of the country, bringing up its socialist democratic ideals.

His progressive inclinations, evident during his career, have been a consistent struggle of convictions about social justice and inequality; what has led him to formulate different reformist and gradual proposals in order to transform, for example, the American health system, education and the vindication of civil rights; proposals that he has consigned with integrity in his book "Our revolution, the fight continues", published after losing against Hillary Clinton the candidacy for the Democratic Party in 2016.

During a speech at Georgetown University in 2015, he called himself a socialist Democrat, coining that this side of ideas is nothing more than a real and accurate preamble to defeat traditional US policy and thus promote a just economy that benefits the working class.

"Democratic socialism means that we must reform a political system that is corrupt and that we must create an economy that works for everyone, not just the rich," he said.

In the same speech, Sanders extolled the success of democratic socialism in Nordic countries. "We start from the success of many other countries in the world, which have done a much better job than us in protecting the needs of their working families, the elderly, children, the sick and the poor," he added the illusion of being able to replicate these social mechanisms in the USA.

Thus, in the announcement of his current candidacy for the endorsement of the Democratic Party, made through email, Sanders again exalt the need to work collectively to defeat not only Donald Trump but the "special interests" of a "dangerous political class" led by the current president.

In turn, Bernie Sanders tweeted: "I ask you to join me as part of an unprecedented and historic grassroots campaign that will start with at least 1 million people across the country."

The race begins

Although it is too early to start the race for the presidency of the United States, the Democrats are beginning to be outlined in an extensive list of aspiring candidates.

Two of the most listened in the panorama, are Kamala Harris, senator by California from 2017, and Elizabeth Warren, senator by Massachusetts from 2013; who, despite having announced their aspirations with priority, remain opaque before the political and popular power that Bernie Sanders still possesses, after having achieved massive demonstrations and support in his 2016 campaign.

"Sanders is popular even in Trump's fiefdoms, where no Democrat would dare to step, as in West Virginia, where he manages to get crowds of miners to move to hear him say that the country's problems do not come from foreigners, but from corruption and the poor distribution of wealth, and repeats that it is necessary to modernize the infrastructure of the country to create employment, "accuses Virginia Rosas de El Comercio.

After announcing his candidacy, Sanders managed to collect in less than 24 hours, 6 million dollars from various donor sources, especially those of citizens who follow their ideas, as reported by The New York Times.

However, their biggest challenge is to appropriate the energy of a renewed Democratic-majority Congress, full of new ideas from the left by women, youth and ethnic minorities.

His proposals

As indicated on its website, some of its recommendations continue to be the same as in 2016, which were adopted by a large part of the Democratic supporters.

"Three years ago, during our 2016 campaign, when we presented our progressive agenda, they told us that our ideas were radical and extreme," says Sanders in a text published by The New York Times. "Well, three years have passed. And, as a result of millions of Americans rising up and fighting, all those policies and more are now supported by a majority, "he adds.

"Universal health, high taxes on the rich, the rise of the minimum wage or the fight against climate change, are its progressive policies," says Pablo Guimón, a correspondent for the newspaper El País.
