Duolingo is an easy-to-use application to love. Not only is it completely free, but it includes classes for more than 40 languages, with constant updates. Although it doesn’t guarantee that it will completely teach you a language, it is a great way to acquire new vocabulary and at least start learning the basics.

However, there are some higher education institutions that are already starting to take Duolingo as a valid educational resource. So much so, that there are already several universities around the world that accept the Duolingo English test as if it were the TOEFL or the IELTS, that is, it has a very high prestige at the university level.

It may sound unbelievable, but right now more than 2,000 educational institutions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, China, Japan, Qatar, and Thailand are accepting the Duolingo English test in this way.

Why is this happening? Assessing applicants’ English in this way is much more convenient for universities. Other tests require students to travel to and be physically present at test centers, in limited time slots. On the other hand, with Duolingo’s online features, it’s easy for universities to keep track of test scores. Thus, they can evaluate a candidate with less effort.

But this way of certifying your English is not only convenient for universities, it is also for students. All you need for this test is a computer with a front-facing camera and microphone, 60 minutes of free time, a valid ID, a good internet connection, and a quiet, well-lit room.

You can take the test at any time, without leaving your home. Duolingo provides you with the results in 48 hours, ready to share them with any institution. However, perhaps the best part of this process is the price. The Duolingo test certification only costs $49, while other tests like IELTS and TOEFL can cost around $150-200.

Some of the question types include:

  • Write the missing letters to complete a text
