After the arrival of color in cinema with a feature film in 1935 (at the hands of film director Rouben Mamoulian with the novel '' The Vanity Fair ''), prejudices have been created about black and white cinema due to the notable advance in technology today. However, these times of pandemic have sent us home and it may be an opportunity to return to these three black and white film classics and give a break to the novelties on the billboard in movie theaters.

The era of black and white has left us true icons of cinema that exude quality both for the script and for their production. Despite the fact that there are generations that do not even know the title of a black and white film, they will certainly never go out of style, such as the case of '' Casablanca '', a jewel of classic cinema launched in 1942.

It should be noted that, when talking about a black and white film, we should not necessarily say that it is old since film directors have tried in recent years to bring black and white back to the big screen, as is the case of the romantic drama '' The Artist '' released in 2011 which was established as the most nominated film in that year, or also, the American film '' Nebraska '' directed by Alexander Payne, released in 2013 and nominated for the Palma de Gold at the Cannes Film Festival of the same year.

These are 3 of the black and white cinema icons of all time:

  1. Casa Blanca

Launched in 1942 and directed by the American director Michael Curtiz, it narrates a romantic drama that takes place in the Moroccan city of Casablanca. A true gem that has the charismatic protagonism of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, and inspired by the theatrical classic '' Everybody Comes to Rick's ''. In 1943, the film was awarded the Academy Award for Best Picture.

  1. A Night at the Opera

Following the Marx Brothers' breakup with Paramount, '' A Night at the Opera '' is their first film with MGM Company, a comedy film directed by Sam Wood and Edmund Goulding released in 1935 that features stellar performances from renowned actors such as Kitty Carlisle, Allan Jones, Margaret Dumont, Sig Ruman, Walter Woolf King and 3 of the 5 Marx Brothers: Groucho, Chico, and Harpo. The cultural impact of the film was so great that in 1993 the film was selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the United States National Film Registry as "a historically and culturally significant film."

  1. Citizen Kane

With Orson Welles behind film directing, writing, and production, he had the opportunity to establish himself as one of the most visionary film directors in 1941 with the film's premiere. An Oscar-winning drama and mystery film for Best Original Screenplay, which was initially a box office failure, ended up becoming one of the greatest works of art in film history, first, because of French critics and above all, after its American re-release in 1956. The film is acclaimed primarily for its innovation in music, photography, and the narrative structure that characterizes it.
