The awards season continues its journey in 2022 and now the stop will be in one of the European countries with the most movie culture: France. For those who don't know, the Cannes Film Festival has unparalleled prestige, as it hosts all kinds of films and documentaries from many parts of the world, regardless of their genre. This edition will be number 75, in which a total of 21 films will be competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or, as well as many others will do the same in different categories.

One of the most striking points to highlight will be the premiere of two films in particular, which will not be in competition but have generated great expectations among the public: "Elvis" and "Top Gun: Maverick." The first is nothing more than a biographical film of the American rock star (starring Austin Butler) and in which some myths and secrets of his life will be shown in detail. As for the second, it is the sequel to the epic story starring Tom Cruise in 1986, who will justly be paid a special tribute for his film career.

Likewise, we cannot miss the opportunity to comment that there will also be a Latin American presence at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. Participating in the short film section will be "Luz noche", directed by the Mexican Kim Torres; Chile will have a special screening with "Mi país imaginario", by the filmmaker Patricio Guzmán; "El doingo y la niebla", from Costa Rica and Qatar, will participate in the Un Certain Regard category; while the documentary "Tres en la deriva del acto creativo" will represent Argentina thanks to Fernando Solanas.

Avant-garde cinema

Over the years, the Cannes Festival has given us extraordinary films, and it is enough to remember that during the past year some already recognized today participated, such as "Drive my car", "The worst person in the world" or "The french dispatch ", which lost to one of the most impressive horror dramas of the last decade like "Titane". This, without a doubt, serves as an example that avant-garde cinema is always present at this festival.

It is worth mentioning that year after year the bar is higher and higher, so millions of moviegoers will be attentive to this edition to discover what will be the next sensation in international cinema. Stars like Tilda Swinton, Kristen Stewart and Idris Elba will be some of those present at Cannes, but without detracting from the directors, who are the true stars of the gala. Some like Hirokazu Kore-eda or Cristian Mungiu will try to take home another Palme d'Or, while others like Claire Denis or David Cronenberg will bet heavily with their works to succeed for the first time.

With the splendor that characterizes it, the Cannes Film Festival will return in style after these last two years of pandemic. The film that will open these ten days of pure cinema will be the French "Coupez!", a comic zombie story directed by Michel Hazanavicius. But, what other surprises will we see in this edition? Take a look at these 5 films that will compete for the Palme d'Or!

Crimes of the future

The share of horror and fiction in this edition of the Cannes Film Festival will be made by director David Cronenberg, who returns to this genre after his 1999 film "eXistenZ". With Kristen Stewart, Léa Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen as protagonists, this plot has about a future in which people are adapting to an environment where there is no pain. Such evolution has led them to a metamorphosis to the point of altering their biological structures.

Broker

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda knew what it's like to win the Palme d'Or in 2018 and now he's back to try to win another award. This time he presents us with a Korean film with an interesting background. The baby boxes are boxes configured so that low-income families leave their babies in the hands of other families who can take care of them, a scenario that will bring together a group of people while they embark on a path that will take them to unexpected destinations.

Brother and sister

One of the house favourites. French director Arnaud Desplechin is one of the best from his country in recent decades and has everything to win the Palme d'Or this year. This drama, with Marion Cotillard and Melvil Poupaud as protagonists, tells the life of two brothers who have been avoiding each other for more than 20 years and who no longer speak to each other. However, after the death of their parents they will be forced to cross paths and leave their differences behind.

Decision to leave

Another Korean film that promises to attract attention. Park Chan-wook is the director of cult movies like "Oldboy" and for this occasion he presents us with a story full of mysteries that will make us become just another investigator. Precisely, it is a detective who will have the mission of clarifying the murder of a man, but not before running into the widow of the deceased who everything points to as the only suspect. Without a doubt, a plot that will leave us glued to the seat.

Armageddon time

Very few details have been revealed in this regard, but everything indicates that this film will be one of the great surprises of the Cannes Festival. Filmmaker James Gray is in charge of the project by writing, producing and directing it. The story is based on the experiences of the director and takes us into the New York of the 80s where he spent his youth. The trio of actors made up of Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins promises to give us good times.
