Netflix is fully committed to spin-offs of well-known productions. Recently, its platform released a teaser for "Wednesday", the first work for Netflix created by Tim Burton, the prestigious film director. In this case, it will be in charge of the production of this new series, which will seek to delve into the history of "The Addams Family". More specifically, from Wednesday. For those who do not remember, it is the daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams. At that time, she will begin to master her psychic ability, with which she will try to prevent crimes within the city. That is, she will seek to solve a family mystery that has been going on for more than 20 years.

The truth is that one of the most exciting things is that it is directed by Tim Burton. In charge of production, he was already in charge of works with similar themes. Among them, “Edward Scissorhands” (1991), “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993), “Sleepy Hollow” (1999), and “Corpse Bride” (2005).

Wednesday: The Series

It should be noted that this fiction will have about 10 episodes in total and there is already a confirmed first season. As for the interpretations, they will be the following: Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Pugsley Addams (Isaac Ordonez), Fingers (Victor Dorobantu), Lurch (George Bucea), and Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie).

And what about its protagonist? Well, the only female daughter of the Addams family will be in charge of Jenna Ortega, a 19-year-old American actress. Despite her age, she already has experience in different horror works. Among others, are “Insidious: Chapter 2” (2013), “The Babysitter: Killer Queen” (2020) or “Scream” (2022).

He was even part of productions corresponding to other genres. She stood out in the dramatic comedy “Jane the Virgin” (2014-2019) as Jane Villanueva, knew how to be Dawn in the film “Saving Flora” (2018), and even played Ellie Alves in the renowned series “You ” from Netflix.

¿Why the name of this girl is a day of the week? When this story was adapted for television in 1964, Charles Addams named it "Wednesday" according to a line from a lullaby called "Monday's Child", but in Latinamerica her name is Merlina.

It is not the first time that an adaptation has been made of this character. In 2013, an unofficial online series known as "Adult Wednesday Addams" appeared, depicting Wednesday's life as a mentally disturbed adult. However, after 13 chapters, it was suspended for legal reasons.

For this reason, it is expected that the Wednesday series seeks to show that dark facet so characteristic of Tim Burton. Surely, there will also be a share of the typical black humor of the series, although it will be necessary to see what tone prevails in this story. Now, what made you choose to make a spin-off about this?

Well, recent trends. In recent years, streaming platforms have sought to delve into the stories of secondary characters from successful series. The objective is clear: to continue expanding the narrative universe of each of these stories, although perhaps without focusing so much on improving quality.

We had clear cases during the last time. The most recognized was the series "The Book of Boba Fett", a series that sought to delve into a Star Wars character who was always secondary and who already appeared in "The Mandalorian". It also happened in Marvel, with productions like "Hawkeye", "Loki" or "WandaVision".

Although it usually works in established franchises, which have a vast universe of characters, it has also been seen in original series. For example, on Netflix, the Spanish series “Merlí” stood out, but after a year of ending, “Merlí: Sapere Aude” was released, which delves into the university life of some young people.

The vast majority of these productions fail to top the original productions, with one exception: "Better Call Saul." This is a prequel to "Breaking Bad", which delves into the character of Saul Goodman, a lawyer who became a fan favorite. Here it was sought to deepen the universe of "Breaking Bad", but looking for a greater narrative quality.

In other words, although everything seemed to indicate that this series was "unnecessary", the time has shown that the creators took advantage of the experience of the "Breaking Bad" phenomenon to improve the narrative and achieve a product of the same quality as its predecessor. However, it seems to be a true exception.

It will be necessary to see what will happen with the Merlina series, but, for now, the fact that Tim Burton is at the helm feeds the expectations of the fans. And for you, will it be better than the original?
