TNT recently released the trailer for the second season of The Alienist , the official title is "Angel of Darkness" to be released on July 26, according to information from Screenrush. If you have not seen the first season yet, it is a good time to do it, if you like detective, mystery and investigation series, The Alienist is an excellent recommendation on the eve of the new season premiere.
The Alienist: Angel of Darkness
This series premiered in 2018 on the TNT channel and is an adaptation of Caleb Carr's eponymous book. It stars Daniel Brühl ( Inglorious Basterds, The Most Wanted Man), Luke Evans ( The Hobbit, Dracula Untold ) and Dakota Fanning ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Benefactor) as Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Reporter John Moore, and Secretary (and now Detective) Sara Howard, respectively. The series follows a series of murders and disappearances committed against children by a sinister serial killer.
The three protagonists who are joined by other characters as part of the "investigation team" will try to stop the murderer, but not before facing prejudice, prevailing corruption and sensationalism of the press in the "Big Apple" of that time . Although it is a series with a police and mystery theme, Dr. Kreizler manages to separate himself from the stereotypes of the detective that we can see in Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot, although he is also persecuted by his own demons. At the same time The Alienist manages to create a dark atmosphere characteristic of 19th century English Gothic literature.
The novel on which the series is based dates back to 1994, writer Caleb Carr used his personal experiences and interest in serial killers to construct the characters and cases that occur in his book. The publication became a best seller, three years later the sequel Angel of Darkness came to light, the raw material for the second season of the television series. According to Minha Serie, in this new installment Sara Howard, who now owns a detective agency, will follow the lead of Ana Linares, the lost daughter of a Spanish diplomat in full political tension over the Cuba issue. Howard will not be alone, he will have the team back to face this new case.
Historic figures and a turn-of-the-century New York city
The first season is set in 1896, the second a year later, in an anarchic New York City, in the style of the Gangs of New York (Martin Scorsese, 2002). In addition to facing the search for the murderer, they will have to face the prevailing corruption in the city police, linked to criminal groups and heavy economic interests.
The only honest support they have is from Theodore Roosevelt, head of the city police, a real person who became president of the United States. Both the series and the novel address other important historical characters that give the story more realism and the second season will be no exception.
In The Alienist we can see the use of psychology and modern investigative methods for the time in the fight against crime, but it will not be easy as long as the corruption of the police and the influence of powerful characters continue to prevail, a topic that the protagonists must face constantly. According to Deadline in 2018 the series managed to rank first in cable series, with more than 50 million viewers on multiple platforms , in addition to numerous nominations including the Emmy and the Golden Globe . Do not miss the premiere of season 2 Angel of Darkness by TNT next July that after two years of pause bring us new mysteries.
