There are only two words to describe Shakira at last night's VMAs: girl power. The singer from Barranquilla shined last night at the MTV Video Music Awards gala not only with her presentation but also with the awards she took home. Here we tell you everything about a ceremony that was flooded with female empowerment.

Shakira at the VMAs: a medley of impact

To start with our summary of the night: the presentation of Shakira. Before, the VMAs have been the stage for women artists to get out of the box in which the industry has wanted to put them. They have been the awards in which the singers have dared to be more risky.

That was the case of Madonna's very famous performance in 1984, in which she sang "Like a Virgin" dressed as a bride. Miley Cyrus' performance of "Wrecking Ball" in 2013 also had an impact at the time, when the singer wanted to change her look and leave the Disney girl image behind.

This time it was Shakira's turn, who made a presentation that today has all social media users talking.

The Colombian started singing her hit "She Wolf" in a simulation of the song's music video. Then, she continued with something more recent: "Te Felicito", the single that made her fans suspicious about her recent divorce from Gerard Piqué. After this, she changed her male dancers and was surrounded by women to sing her most recent single: "TQG", which is a collaboration with fellow Colombian Karol G.

This was followed by some more traditional hits from the singer. She made a percussion arrangement of his tango "Objection" , followed by "Whenever Wherever" and "Hips Don't Lie" . Finally, she ended with the session with Bizzarrap, which she sang from start to finish.

With this ten-minute presentation in front of an audience of celebrities who sang and danced with her and another people with Colombian flags, Shakira shows that at 46 years old, she not only continues to release hits but that her past successes are still valid. Shakira is still a popular singer not only of one generation but of several.

The awards she won

2023 has been Shakira's year so far. After going through a painful divorce and a legal battle for custody of her children, the singer has returned to being as prolific as before. So it's no surprise that she won the Collaboration of the Year award, which she shares with Karol G, for their hit "TQG."

Furthermore, last night she was the first South American to receive the Video Vanguard award for her career, which yesterday she demonstrated is still valid and alive.

VMAs: girl power

With all this, Shakira was not the only one to shine during last night's ceremony. Karol G also made a presentation and between the two of them they made it clear that Latin American women are making a strong impact in the music industry.

Additionally, this was the first year in which the nominees for Artist of the Year were only women . The award went to Taylor Swift, the queen of the music industry. In addition to this, the American singer won other awards that made her, once again, break the awards records at this gala.

Since last night it is clear that the music industry and popular music are now ruled by women.
