What is it about?
The journalist Eddie Brock is investigating the Life Foundation, directed by scientist Carlton Drake, to make a report that will mean his great return. In the middle of the investigation, he discovers that this company is experimenting with humans and is obsessed with bringing this information to light.
In search of more evidence, Eddie becomes host of an alien symbiote that will manifest in the form of alter-ego. We will watch Eddie, then, fight with this new him: Venom.
Some facts about the movie
This film is based on two comics: "Venom: Lethal Protector" and "Planet of the Symbiotes". Both revolve around Venom, Eddie Borck and the experiments of the Life Foundation, which tries to create symbiotic creatures with humans and aliens.
The character of Venom is much loved by comic lovers. So much so, that he is one of the few villains to have complete comic series dedicated to him alone, without the appearance of his antagonist superhero. We've seen Venom in Spider-Man 3 before as one of the three villains and enemies of Spider-Man. In this previous appearance of the supervillain, he was played by Topher Grace.
Interestingly, this time the American comic strip film is played by two English actors. Venom is played by actor Tom Hardy, known for his participation in action superproductions such as Mad Max and The Dark Knight Rises, in which he gained experience as a supervillain in his role as mercenary Bane.
Dr. and visionary scientist Carlton Drake, who seeks to create a new species more resistant than humans, is played by English actor and rapper Riz Ahmed. A few days ago, the artist of Pakistani descent proudly boasted on his Instagram that the audience of the Venom premiere in the United States had been one of the most racially diverse this year.

This actor is strongly committed to the diversity of race in superhero films and children's films, because he believes that all children and young people of all races should feel represented in these superproductions. This has also been seen with his participation in Rogue One: a Star Wars story.
This film is the first produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment, in collaboration with Marvel. It is played, then, with the plots of Marvel's cinematographic universe, but it does not participate in it. Thus, this film does not work as a spin-off of any other previously produced and is expected, quite the contrary, to open a whole new universe that will be called Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters.
The film had many scripts and projects since the first appearance of the character in the cinema in 2007. It has changed from scriptwriters more than three times to its final version, which we will see in theaters.
The reception
The criticism has been a bit harsh with the beloved supervillain. The Rotten Tomatoes page qualifies it with a very low 30% over 100%, based on the opinion of 224 critical reviews. "Venom's first standalone movie turns out to be like the comics character in all the wrong ways – chaotic, noisy, and in desperate need of a stronger attachment to Spider-Man," it argues.
The rating of the audience on this same website is much higher: 89%. The IMDb page is more compassionate with the production and gives a score of 7.1 / 10. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film produced with a budget of USD $ 100 million, collected only in its first weekend around USD $ 80.3 million.
As Riz Ahmed already celebrated, the aforementioned media also affirms that there is a dramatic ethnic diversity among the audience of the Venom premiere. The aforementioned magazine, aware of the stoning of criticism of the film, speculates that this resounding success may be due to the premiere season, because in October it does not compete with other superhero films, which usually premiere in summer.
It also suspects that it is because it appeals to an audience of ethnically diverse fanboys. Will Venom , then, be a movie made only for the comic fans? Is not it made for critics? We will see.
