Leer en español: Sky Rojo: la serie que busca repetir el éxito de La casa de papel
Spanish fictions are a real hit in the streaming world. Netflix productions, such as Elite, Merlí, Viviendo sin permiso or La casa de Papel , managed to be a furor for subscribers. Particularly the last one, which La Vanguardia classifies as an “indisputable international success”.
This production by Álex Pina ended up catapulting him as one of the stars of this country's series. Previously, he had excelled with productions such as Los Serrano, El Barco, or Vis a Vis, but it was in this case that he managed to enhance all his creativity.
Sky Rojo is the new series in which the producer follows the same formula as all his previous creations, especially the one related to robberies.
After the premiere of its first season, of 8 episodes, it is seen as the " next great success of Netflix ", with more than solid and convincing arguments, which show that the narrative twists and the action sequences are one of the condiments that the viewers love. Let's see why Sky Rojo is succeeding on the platform and what is the secret behind these productions.
The success of Sky Rojo
The first thing to say is that there is so much confidence in this series that it has even been confirmed that there will be a second season. According to Esquire, it would be released in 2022 and will show how the lives of the protagonists continue after they have left the Club de las novias.
One of the keys to this series is that it manages to perfect something that was already noticeable in other stories, such as La Casa de Papel: the feminist struggle and conflicts in society. Especially, something related to the white slave trade and prostitution, where the theme is strongly criticized by the stories of the protagonists.
Precisely, Sky Rojo narrates the life of three prostitutes who flee from the Bridal Club: a luxury brothel where powerful men satisfy their dark fantasies.
Through extremely explicit dialogues, viewers are aware of the dangers posed by certain social contexts and how inequality can allow some perverse structures, as in this case with pimping.
However, Sky Rojo not only has virtues from the point of view of history and everything it seeks to criticize, but also from the cinematographic section. One of the bases of the formula of this production is to be inspired by an extremely popular director: Quentin Tarantino.
The influence of Tarantino is felt in many parts of the story, but mainly in the masterful scenes of violence, photography, and the use of the color palette. This allows each action sequence to be interesting to watch due to its own composition, but it is also loaded with excesses that give it a frenetic pace, generating the desire to see more and more chapters.
Last but not least, the choice of the cast is completely on the right track. Not only from a commercial point of view (being provided with great figures who attract attention for themselves), but also for their own acting performances. The roles of Verónica Sánchez, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Asier Etxeandia, Tany Prado, Enric Auquer and Lali Espósito are completely correct.
Although a fresh structure is handled, it is also engaging from the outset, as it follows the successful formula of other productions (especially La casa de Papel). Thus, in its 8 25-minute episodes, Sky Rojo manages to combine social criticism with a hypnotic narrative and visual style. We are all looking forward to seeing how it will continue!
