It's still not exactly clear how it came about, but Wes Anderson has been the most popular movie director on TikTok in recent weeks. Videos that emulate his style to portray places, situations or simply travel blogs are a trend on the social network. Perhaps his success could be due to the fact that he is the filmmaker who comes closest to 'aesthetic', a buzzword on the internet.

This was perfect for the launch it had in theaters a couple of weeks ago. With him trending on TikTok, the film surely got a wide audience interested in getting in on the video wave with his style. With "Asteroid City", the director went from the (very) small screen (the phone screen); to the big screen once again.

What is the film about?

It is tagged as a comedy, but it also has sci-fi and romance traits. It is set in a summer in the mid-50s and portrays the story of a camp dedicated to astronomy in a fictional American city, the same name as the film.

The cast is top quality with actors and actresses with a long history. Tilda Swinton, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman and Edward Norton stand out. The plot is written by Wes Anderson in the company of Roman Coppola.

Wes Anderson Trend

The director's symmetry successfully made it to the TikTok trends. Few styles and brands like that of this director have been coined with such success on the social network. This trend consists of trying to recreate shots with the director's symmetrical style and trying to emulate what was done in “Grand Hotel Budapest”.

Many take advantage of their trips or landscapes to get down to work. If the surrounding structures have a range of pastel colors, the TikTok video clip will have much more potential. The title, the time and especially the music from the soundtrack of his most famous films are the other key aspects.

Usually, the algorithm of cinema in the social network tends to analyze or explain this type of style with each director, but they are rarely imitated, and it is almost unprecedented that it has become a trend. However, there have already been parodies or imitations of great directors' styles on TikTok.

Filmmaker Trends on TikTok

Not counting Anderson's, one of the most recurring imitations is with videos with feet in the foreground. These TikToks are a nod to Quentin Tarantino, who also has his popular 'crash zoom' as a brand, sometimes recreated on the social network.

On the other hand, there is the famous 'dolly' characteristic of Spike Lee. In some videos on the social network, they have used it for videos related to anti-racist issues or that delve into the daily life of African-Americans. The same has happened in some videos with the aftershot that Christopher Nolan usually does.

There are also content creators who often recreate scenes. The most popular are those of the dance that appears in “La La Land”. In fact, there are some accounts specialized in recreating famous scenes.

One of the movie director marks with the potential to become a TikTok trend is the Kubrick look. This famous plane could be used for comedy skits or the dramatization of some situations with some evil character in the video. Another style that could be imitated is the sequence shot, which, although it is a technique used by many directors, is more recurrent in the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu.

The possibilities with mimicking styles can be endless. However, with the cinema, something happens opposite to the music on TikTok. Generally, several musicians have been discovered by fragments of their songs used in the social network. With the cinema, it seems that content creators are not looking for discoveries, but for references so that their videos attract attention.
