First Look at “Macondo”, the Netflix Series based on “One Hundred Years of Solitude”

There are fictitious places that adhere to our collective imagination and mark us in such a way that it becomes part of our culture. Macondo is one of those places. 55 years ago, one of the most important Colombian and Latin American literary works came to light, “One Hundred Years of Solitude", which led its author, Gabriel García Márquez, to be recognized worldwide and win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. Its impact was so great that the novel has been translated into more than 45 languages, has approximately 400 editions, and in 2019 Netflix announced that it would be adapted into a series format.

On October 21, the streaming platform released the first preview of the long-awaited series, which is titled "Macondo." This is the first authorized audiovisual adaptation of the novel that narrates the comings and goings of the Buendía family. Bearing this in mind, expectations are high, since "One Hundred Years of Solitude" carries with it the legacy of García Márquez and one of the most valuable representations of Colombian culture. From now on the eyes are on the series, and it is expected that it will not disappoint. Meanwhile, we tell you what is known about the expected adaptation.

When Does “Macondo” Premiere?

Although Netflix has not yet announced the premiere date, speculation suggests that the series will be released in mid-2024, taking into account that in the official press release, Francisco Ramos, Vice President of Content for Latin America, assured that from October 21 the production was launched.

Who Is Behind the Production Team?

It has already been announced that the first season will be directed by Argentine director Alex García López (“The Witcher”, “Utopia”), who is already a trusted director of Netflix, and Colombian director Laura Mora, the mind behind “Los reyes del mundo”, which has been selected to represent Colombia at the 2023 Academy Awards. For his part, Paulo Pérez (“Green Frontier”) is behind the direction of photography.

Eugenio Caballero ("Pan's Labyrinth") and Bárbara Enríquez ("Roma") will be in charge of the production design, while the script is in charge of José Rivera ("The 33"), Natalia Santa ("El robo del siglo"), Camila Brugés (“Green Frontier”), Albatroz González (“Lynch”) and the advice of María Camila Arias (“Los reyes del mundo”).

Finally, behind the production of the series is Dynamo, who has also made "Narcos", "History of a crime: Colmenares", "Green Frontier", "El robo del siglo", among others.

The Cast Announcement Is Still Awaited.

It has not yet been announced who will be the actors in charge of giving life to the particular and unforgettable characters of the novel, such as Úrsula Buendía, Jose Arcadio Buendía, Remedios la Bella or Colonel Aureliano Buendía. However, it is expected that they will have the greatest Colombian talent that can fulfill this great responsibility and honor for a Colombian.
