Tom Holland joins the club of celebrities who stay away from social networks. The British actor who plays Spider-Man expressed that he made the decision with his mental health in mind, the main reason why several artists decide not to have these applications or simply use them very little.

“I am going to take a break from social media for my mental health, because I find Instagram and Twitter too stimulating and overwhelming. When I read things about myself, I get overwhelmed and in the end everything is detrimental to my health," explained the actor in a video posted on his Instagram account.

Tom Holland's decision may be due to 'doomscrolling', a new practice that has become more acute with confinement during the pandemic and that consists of addiction to the consumption of bad news, which is generally spread through social networks.

Doomscrolling directly affects people's moods and has been joined by cyberbullying and irresponsibility with data privacy as the main reasons why some celebrities leave social networks.

Celebrities without social networks

The stars of the show have a privilege that gives them success and fame, but the other side comes when their public in social networks monitors and judges each of the actions they carry out. Therefore, many prefer not to be active through these platforms.

Despite the overwhelming fame of both, which multiplied when they were a couple, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt did not give any social network a chance. The actress only opened her Instagram last year to activism for causes related to feminism or the environment. On the other hand, at the premiere of the movie "Once upon a time… in Hollywood", Brad Pitt responded to the media on social networks: "Life is very beautiful without them, I don't see why I need social networks".

On why he didn't have Twitter, George Clooney explained in an interview with Variety: “I like to drink at night. I could easily say something stupid," the actor said. Other celebrities without them are Keanu Reeves, Emma Stone, Kate Winslet, Scarlett Johanson, Daniel Radcliffe or Emily Blunt, among others.

There are few efforts that social networks can make to control their main problems and even fewer cyberattacks against celebrities, since the impunity of people who attack them is higher, while mistreatment towards them for being a public figure has been normalized. This could be the reason why some celebrities use them only to promote the productions or events of which they are the protagonists.

It has also been witnessed how information that should be private about the life of each celebrity is spread. Many have seen how others leak intimate images of them through these social networks, or the cyberbullying of fans intensifies when their phone number or the address where they live have been leaked, among other situations that generate stress.

Specialists do not invite you to leave social networks, but to consume them in a responsible way. Nor do we spend a lot of time in our lives so that this will not incur our mental health, which can also result in physical deterioration.
