This is how Latin America will be Represented at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival

The May 16, the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival begins, one of the most important film events in the audiovisual industry. As usual, there is Latin American participation in a couple of categories. However, the region was relegated from the top prize, which is the Palme d'Or for Best Feature Film.

Films from Argentina, Brazil, and Chile will compete in the Un Certain Regard category. In the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film, there is representation from Argentina and Colombia. On the other hand, there will be a premiere from Argentina, the special screening of “Pictures of Ghosts” from Brazil, and Brazilian representation in the critics' selection of the week. Below are the productions that will take center stage at the Cannes Film Festival, which ends on May 27th.

Short films

“Nothing at all is this” from Argentina

A child's perspective story about her mother, who has a serious obsession with interior decoration, especially sugar bowls, comes to Cannes. From the homonymous short story by Samanta Schweblin, published in her book “7 Empty Houses”, this adaptation by Francisco Cantón and Patricio Martínez will compete for the Palme d'Or in the short film competition.

"The Bitch" from Colombia

With this short film, Carla Melo will represent Colombia in Cannes. This animated piece presents the story of a chicken-girl who witnesses the transformations of her dog. Deep down, it is a reflection on being a mother, daughter, and woman in today's society. Together with "Nada de todo es esto", it will compete for the Palme d'Or in the short film category.

Un Certain Regard

“Crowrã” from Brazil

With a two-hour film, Joao Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora compete in this category for their work on "Crowrã". This film focuses on a story of resistance that takes place in 1940. The protagonist is guided by his rites and fights to maintain his freedom and that of his community. The film is a co-production between Brazil and Portugal.

"Los Delincuentes" of Argentina

Rodrigo Moreno is the director of this story about a couple of frustrated bank employees. To get out of the monotony, they carry out a crime that influences the future of one of the two. Although the film mainly represents Argentina, it is also co-produced by Chile and Brazil.

"The Settlers" of Chile

After showing himself with several short films, Felipe Gálvez will present his first feature film at the Cannes Film Festival. The story follows a Chilean, an English soldier and an American mercenary who embark on an adventure on horseback in order to delimit a territory. Along the way, they carry out hostile actions against indigenous natives in Chilean Patagonia.

Premiere

"Eureka" from Argentina

Lisandro Alonso, from Buenos Aires, already knows what it feels like to present a film at the Cannes Film Festival. This year he does it with “Eureka”, a film that does not compete, but is part of the festival selection and will have its premiere there. The film is set in 1870 and is divided into four acts. Alonso managed to have his films like “La Libertad”, “Liverpool” and “Jauja” screened in Cannes.

Critic's Week Selection

“Levante” of Brazil

This is Lillah Halla's debut feature film, which presents the drama of a volleyball player facing an unwanted pregnancy. The story of the athlete with projection reflects the harassment to which she is exposed for wanting to have an abortion and is taken as a scapegoat in favor of a pro-life group.

This will be the Latin American representation at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, we hope that they will be screened in the region soon.
