Although the first installment lasted over two and a half hours, "Dune" is becoming a franchise with many followers in science fiction cinema. The premiere of the trailer for its sequel was the big topic of the week. Those who endured the first will have much more expectations for the second since their indications point to a complete development of the open ending they left.

In its first part, "Dune" presents the characteristics of Arrakis, a planet-made desert where spice abounds. This raw material is an essential product in the galaxy, and a decision by the emperor upsets the 'status quo' of the territory. Dominion of this fief passed from the Harkonnen family to House Atreides. Paul (played by Timothée Chalamet) is not only the heir to the Atreides dynasty, but he has on his figure the halo of messiah with superstitious characteristics inherited from his mother.

With "Dune: Part 2", its director Denis Villeneuve is expected to consolidate that niche of fans looking forward to the premiere. One of the attractions of this sequel will be the development of Chani, a character played by Zendaya, and the love relationship suggested in the first film with Paul, intensifying with what is seen in the released trailer.

It was learned in July of last year that the production was in the shooting phase, and by December 2022, it was ready. This May 3, viewers were able to see in the trailer some critical details of the development of the plot, which is based on the book of the same name by Frank Herbert, released in 1965.

The production features a squad of actors with Oscar nominations, such as the lead Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and the two-time Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor, Christopher Walken. In addition, it has high-caliber figures such as Zendaya and Rebecca Ferguson herself.

What Would be the Plot Axis of "Dune: Part 2"?

The director gives hints about what comes with this installment. The viewer already has as support the introduction and the codes of this universe that poses a war scenario for controlling the spice. Villenueve said that "Duna" was more the appetizer and "Duna: Part 2" the main dish.

The official synopsis for the film highlights the journey of Paul, his mother Jessica (played by Rebecca Ferguson), Chani, and the Fremen community against the group of conspirators that wiped out his family. It is also suggested that he must choose between love and the universe's fate already known to him.

As planned, the film that has already been released and the one about to be released cover the plot of the novel on which they are based. However, it is known that the literary universe of "Duna" has "Duna: Messiah." With the trend we have seen in Warner Bros, it would not be strange that they bet on the literary sequel to complete the trilogy in the cinema. Of what Frank Herbert wrote, there are at least five different books than the one covered by the film franchise.

Cinema and Streaming?

Anyone with an HBO Max subscription can see the first installment of "Dune." The film's success on the platform depended on the sequel's making, and it did. In addition, during the festival season, the film garnered many awards in technical categories.

This year, the premiere will be on November 3, exclusively for theaters. With this, the film will have to compete at the box office against big releases like “The Marvels” a week later and “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” two weeks later

It is expected several weeks before the film's premiere on HBO Max. With the franchise's first installment, there was a controversy that almost ended in legal matters. Denis Villeneuve asked that a simultaneous premiere not be made in the cinema and on the platform. Still, Warner Bros decided to do it that way to avoid facing a box office failure and losing the expectation generated. The exclusive release in theaters was taken for granted with the franchise positioned.
