The Grand Tours Of 2021 And Their Winners

2021 was a great year for cycling. With the continuation of the pandemic, the bicycle has become the means of transport par excellence for those who want to avoid the crowds of public transport. As a result, the sport of cycling as such has gained unprecedented popularity.

It is for this reason that we decided to review the results of the top events of this discipline, the grand tours, to give you an idea of how this year developed and what awaits us in the future of cycling.

Italy spin

The first of these competitions was held between May 8 and 30, 2021 and consisted of a total of 21 stages with a distance of 3410.9 kilometers.

Colombian Egan Bernal was victorious on this lap. The Ineos Grenadiers rider was the champion of the general classification, thus accumulating his second Grand Tour. Second place was Italian Damiano Caruso from Bahrain Victorious and the podium was completed by Briton Simon Yates from Team Exchange.

Egan had a commanding performance, leading the standings from stage 9 to 21 and finishing a minute and a half ahead of second place. He was also second in the mountain classification, accumulating 140 points.

Also noteworthy this round is the fifth place achieved in the general classification by Daniel Martínez, another Colombian who at that time was part of the Ineos Grenadiers team.

Tour de France

The most striking competition in cycling was held from June 26 to July 15 of this year and comprised 3414.4 km divided into 21 stages.

The top prize went to Tadej Pogacar of UAEM Team Emirates. In the end, he ended up taking almost 5 and a half minutes to second place, Jonas Vinegegaard of the Jumbo-Visma team. But the surprise of the event was the third place of the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz.

Carapaz gained great confidence thanks to this position, a fact that allowed him to win the gold medal in Tokyo 2020 in road cycling and get a congratulation from Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso.

This was Pogacar's second victory on the Tour, a fact that led him to establish himself as the best active cyclist at the moment.

Something that is worth mentioning is that this Tour was marked by the recklessness of a woman, who with a sign caused the fall of dozens of cyclists. The accident was so serious that several of them had to withdraw from the competition, including Spaniard Marc Soler, who broke both arms.

Back to Spain

Finally, we have the Vuelta a España, which was held between August 14 and September 15 of this year in 21 stages with a total distance of 3,417 km.

In this competition, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic of Team Jumbo Visma rose as champion, winning for the third time in a row. Roglic destroyed the competition, winning by 4 minutes 42 seconds, the biggest difference from the second place since the Vuelta in 1997.

Second place went to Enric Mas and third place was completed by Australian Jack Haig, but the lap belonged entirely to Roglic.
