National Geographic’s women exhibition arrives at Latin America

On October 22, 2019, as a way to approach the 100th anniversary of the U.S. constitutional amendment confirming women’s right to vote, National Geographic's new exhibition and book were launched. “Women: A Century of Change” showcases iconic women around the world, celebrates their strength and resilience and reflects on where the world’s women have been, where they are now and where they are going. 

This exhibition, that is taking place in the National Geographic Museum until 2020's spring, has now arrived in Latin America with the name of “Mujeres, poder femenino en foco”. As read on Infobae, it will be available at the Usina del Arte in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 

According to La Nación, Susan Goldberg, curator, Editorial Director of National Geographic Partners and Editor in Chief of National Geographic magazine, selected the most relevant images from the early 20th century to the present.

"Women have been central to the National Geographic narrative throughout our more than 130 years of history. Frame by frame, these images form a global chronicle of women's lives. This exhibition, the first of its kind in Latin America, brings together some of the most relevant and historical photographs of the last century, which have had a great impact on society, placing the role of women in first plans around the world”, says Goldberg in the curatorial text.

"Our extensive archives offer captivating impressions of women over time; how they were perceived, how they were treated, how much power they had, how they faced challenges and how they spent their days, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. The inspiring, moving, and extraordinary stories of women who have crossed borders, fought against adversity and opened paths for both themselves and others. There is no single image that represents the face of femininity, but, together, these photographs illustrate how the role of women evolved in societies around the world. With compositions that range from the traditional to the provocative, the images are divided into categories that focus on a quality of their characters: joy, beauty, love, wisdom, strength, and hope."

The highlight of this exhibition is the book “Women: The National Geographic Image Collection”, which was released on October 15, 2019, and, according to The National Geographic, contains 450 stunning photographs selected from National Geographic’s image archive, including additional images that you will not find in the exhibition.

Also, the book is accompanied by several interviews and portraits, captured by acclaimed NG photographer Erika Larsen, of women that founded or helped shape the #Metoo, #Girlboss, Time's Up and the Black Lives Matter movements. The list includes, among others, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Goodall, Christiane Amanpour, Laura Bush, Gloria Allred, Roxane Gay, Melinda Gates, and New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern. It also has more than 300 images from 50 countries that, like the exhibition, compile testimonies about what it means to be female.
