Colombia’s 69 embassies and diplomatic missions worldwide are set to champion peacebuilding, biodiversity and climate crisis response, and cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity, marking a strategic pivot in the nation’s international cultural diplomacy efforts.
Colombia’s New Approach
In a significant shift in Colombia’s approach to international relations, the nation’s embassies and diplomatic missions around the globe are gearing up to address some of the most pressing global challenges. Catalina Ceballos, the Director of Cultural Affairs at the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this Tuesday that peacebuilding, biodiversity, and the climate crisis, along with cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity, will be the focal points of Colombia’s diplomatic endeavors moving forward.
This transformative agenda signals a departure from traditional diplomatic practices, placing culture at the heart of bilateral dialogues. “The issues we are going to work on are peace, biodiversity, cultural diversity, and territory,” Ceballos explained, emphasizing the role of culture as a guarantor and mediator in international relations. Elizabeth Taylor, Deputy Minister for Multilateral Affairs, added that this year’s cultural diplomacy strategy would evolve into a public policy enabling the repatriation of heritage pieces, ensuring Colombian artists gain international visibility, and boosting sports and cultural exchanges. “It’s not about promoting an image; it’s about reflecting Colombia’s identity. Culture, education, science, and sports will be essential mechanisms to establish, strengthen, and diversify our international relations,” Taylor stated.
Promoting the Spanish Language
An integral part of this strategy includes promoting the Spanish language as a foreign language in various countries, fostering closer ties with different regions, and leveraging these platforms to highlight the peace agreement signed in 2016 between the Colombian government and the now-demobilized FARC guerrilla group.
Key to this direction is the ‘Houses for Peace,’ spaces dedicated to reflection on peace, reconciliation, and non-repetition through participatory processes. “The houses, located in 29 Colombian municipalities, align with the Foreign Ministry’s comprehensive vision and commitment to promoting the rights of migrants,” Taylor mentioned. These initiatives acknowledge the migration phenomenon and aim to support the effective integration of migrants in areas most affected by migration.
Additionally, the Foreign Ministry revealed plans to focus part of its cultural diplomacy on celebrating the centenary of ‘La Vorágine,’ a novel by José Eustasio Rivera set in the Amazon rainforest. Published in 1924, the book addresses border issues and the exploitation of rubber workers, reflecting Colombia’s rich literary heritage and the depth of its cultural narratives.

This novel, among others, will be featured at international book fairs, including those in Guadalajara, São Paulo, and Frankfurt, showcasing Colombia’s literary contributions to the world stage.
