The word diva comes from the Latin divus, which means divine, deity. These seven Mexican women have reached glory to the point of being called divas. They are versatile women who have excelled in more than one profession.

They are presenters, singers, actresses of cinema, theater and the Latin American genre par excellence: the telenovela. In celebration of the birth of one of them, Lucero, we bring you this list of seven Mexican stars.
Lucerito
Lucerito started as a teenage star. She recorded the film 'Fever of love' with Luis Miguel when he was 16 years old. We can also see her in the Netflix series, interpreted by Corina Acosta. From then on, she always participated in the production or soundtrack of the films and telenovelas in which she acted.
These women seem to be only the stars, but they are much more than the face of the productions in which they participate. Lucero likes to get involved in behind-the-scenes work. In the 90s, she earned the nickname of 'the bride of America'. Her nickname fits perfectly, because her fame and influence exceed Mexico. While singing mostly pop ballad, Lucero is also known for singing rancheras. Today she turns 49.
María Felix
She was the protagonist of the golden age of Mexican cinema. During the decades of 1940 and 1950, Felix acted under the direction of greats like Luis Buñuel. Recognized for her beauty and elegance, Maria Felix was also very talented and intelligent.
They called her 'La Doña' for her role as Doña Bárbara in the homonymous film based on the classic of Venezuelan literature. She also starred in the seventies telenovela 'La Constitución', a Mexican-era drama.
By that time, she had already made a film career in Europe, had returned to Mexico, and had rejected several roles in Hollywood. She inspired the song 'María bonita' (Pretty Maria), by the composer Agustín Lara.
Friend of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, María Feliz posed for several artists and was an inspiration for writers of the stature of Carlos Fuentes.
Veronica Castro
Her career began in the fotonovela and the theater. Her most remembered roles are in the Venezuelan film 'Cuando quiero llorar no lloro' (When I want to cry I don´t), which inspired a telenovela in Colombia that was a success; and her leading role in 'The rich also cry', based on a soap opera.
Verónica Castro is the witness and actress of the evolution of the genre of the Latin American novel. Now, as in a kind of return and reflection on herself and her career, we see her in two Latin American series that are trending on Netflix. In 'Luis Miguel: the series', as a character, played by Marcela Guirado, we see her interview the artist on several occasions.
In 'La casa de las flores', a series that parodies and honors the telenovela, plays the role of the matriarch of the De La Mora family. Castro is also the mother of the singer Cristian Castro and she was also an idol of fashion.
Yuri
She is the queen of 'música para planchar' (ballads songs). Yuri is a little Rocío Durcal and a little Dona Summer. She was able to mix her Mexican romance influences with American pop. In 1982, she became the first Latin American to win the Golden Record in Spain for her album 'Llena de Dulzura', in which 'La maldita primavera' is.
Today, we know and listen her, even those who were born after the 80s. In 'Luis Miguel: the series' we attended her marriage with Fernando Iriarte, which ended in divorce a few years later. In 1994, she starred in a telenovela with Chayanne. She has also been invited as a jury in different versions of La Voz contest program. Her ballads and songs of spite are the soundtrack of heartbreak and falling in love throughout Latin America.
Gloria Trevi
She started in the group Boquitas Pintadas. During the 1990s, Trevi released five albums as a soloist. She is, without doubt, a Mexican pop diva. Her music is more influenced by other rhythms such as North American rock and her raspy voice gives another pop tint.
In the early years of 2000, the singer was in jail accused of sexual abuse. Then she was acquitted by Mexican justice for lack of evidence. She had a son who was conceived in prison.
Contrary to what was thought, La Trevi returned recharged from prison. Her single 'Todos me miran' is from that period after jail. Besides singing, this diva plays the piano. As if that were not enough, Gloria Trevi considered launching herself as a candidate for the Mexican presidency in 2006.
Paulina Rubio
In more than thirty years of artistic career, Paulina Rubio has already given us many successes. She started when she was ten years old in the band Timbiriche, a children's group of Latin pop with which she recorded ten albums. She put herself 'the golden girl', because that's how her first solo album was called and that's what we've called her ever since.
Although she is a pop singer, the influence of ranchera is undeniable in her songs. She has never been a singer of traditional Mexican music, as Lucero has been, but some of that can be seen in her music and her style.
She is the interpreter of successes such as 'Mío', 'El último adiós', 'Causa y efecto', and 'Yo no soy esa mujer'. She uses cowboy and mariachi aesthetics in her videos and uses ranchera instruments in her songs.
Thalia
She was also a member of the band Timbiriche. She is interested in Mexican themes. In her music this is not only seen in instruments and arrangements, as in the case of Paulina Rubio, but also in her lyrics.
'Amor a la mexicana' has undeniable band influences and in her video she uses versions of the typical costume. She is also a singer of other singles such as 'No me taught', 'Wrong' and 'Brown skin'. She was also the protagonist of the telenovela 'María la del barrio', which was a great success. The soap operas in which she performed, especially those of the series of the Marías, ('María la del barrio', 'Marimar', and 'María Mercedes') are those that have been seen in more countries.
