Peru's copper and gold production, a major global metal exporter, will increase by 27% and 12% respectively in 2022 due to the start of new operations, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Francisco Ísmodes, said Thursday.
The official said during a mining event in the south of the Andean country, Arequipa, that copper production would add up to 2.5 million tons this year, a slight increase compared to last year when it amounted to about 2.44 metric tons.
Peru is the second largest producer of copper and zinc, and the sixth gold. The sector is vital in the economy because its sales represent 60 percent of total shipments.
"We have been improving in the last four years, we have increased copper production by 77% and it is projected that until 2022 we will increase by 27% more, but gold production will also increase by 12%," said Ísmodes.
Gold production added 142.64 million fine grams last year, 6.1% compared to 2017, according to official data.
