Leer en español: Películas de Marvel: ¿son cine o no?

The renowned film director, director of Taxi Driver, Casino, Sinister Island, among many other cinematic successes, came out publicly to say that Marvel movies should not be considered cinema and compared them to "theme parks."

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn't the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being. ”

The world stopped for a moment with these statements and then, as expected, many jumped to criticize him and others to defend him. Among the defenders was the romantic comedy actress Jennifer Aniston, especially known for her role in the television comedy Friends.

Aniston told Variety magazine that the trend of films of this type has affected the film industry and that the quality was falling. In addition, she recalled the days in which the actors recorded everything in the recording sets, unlike what happens with these films that many are visual effects added in the post-production.

But other great movie figures came out to criticize Scorsese's comments, such as Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) and Samuel L. Jackson. Downey Jr., for example, said in an interview on The Howard Stern Show that he appreciated the filmmaker's opinion: "We need all the different perspectives to reach an agreement and move on." What he did say is that it makes no sense to say that something is not cinema because it is a phenomenon that has come stomping the film industry.

Agree or not, you have to accept one thing: Marvel movies are booming. Perhaps Scorsese ignored some of the problems shown by the superhero movies behind the costumes and visual effects. The truth is that its success is currently indisputable and each new release turns out to be a hit on the billboard, beating all the records again and again. That, not counting the amount of merchandising they manage to sell.

So leaving aside the controversies, but taking advantage that nobody stops talking about Marvel, we bring a bit about Phase 4. These will be the new releases that we will see from here until 2023.

The Comic Con of San Diego 2019 was the perfect scenario that Marvel took advantage of to show its fans what is coming in the Marvel universe. The calendar includes sequels and new stories. After the success of Avengers: Endgame, which surpassed the record in ticket office that the Avatar movie had, Phase 4 is expected to be full of new box office records.

Black widow

It will hit theaters in May 2020 and since summer 2019 we learned that the movie that has Scarlett Johanson as the protagonist was already being recorded. The film will be a prequel to the story we have already seen.

Eternals

In November 2020, Eternals will be launched with a cast that will include actresses such as Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie. The film tells the story of a group of immortal humaoids that must protect humanity.

Shang-Chi

This superhero will hit theaters in 2021 with the legend of the 10 rings. The comic was previously criticized because this character, whose practice is martial arts, was full of stereotypes. However, Marvel seeks to break up with these to create a true hero.

Dr. Strange

Also in 2021 the sequel to Dr. Strange will arrive. And for now, all we have are rumors about characters like Tilda Swinton as The Elder. Meanwhile, what we do know is that Stephen Strange will be joined by the Scarlet Witch and will be played by Elizabeth Olsen.

Spiderman

We could not fail to include the superhero who got the attention during 2019. And not precisely for his exploits, but for the almost endless dispute in which Disney and Sony were for the rights of the film. Now, after a long battle, we know that we will see the third film of this saga in 2021 and we will have a further dose of Peter Parker.

These are not the only premieres that Marvel already confirmed. Thor 4, What if …, Loki, Wandavision, Hawkeye are some of those who will reach both the big screen and the girl. And we are still waiting for the confirmation of other releases.
