The migration crisis on the southern border of the United States continues to claim lives. This week, Texas state officials found, 250 km from the southern border, a trailer with 50 people who died, apparently due to exhaustion and excessive heat inside the vehicle that had no ventilation in an environment that has reached the 40º C. during this summer.
Until now, the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, managed to confirm that of the 50 deceased, 22 were of Mexican nationality, 7 Guatemalan and 2 Honduran. The remaining 19 fatal victims have not yet been identified.
For their part, the survivors, with clear signs of fatigue, tiredness and dehydration, were transferred to nearby clinics and hospitals.
The United States Department of Homeland Security reported that, so far, there are 3 people detained who are suspected of being related to migrant smuggling.
Recently, the president of Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, had requested in an official visit to Washington a greater commitment to achieve safe, orderly and regularized migration. Adding that the main reasons for migration from their country to the north are poverty, climate change and insecurity.
This tragedy is the deadliest in the recent history of migration routes, already dangerous.
The news has revived the already heated immigration debate in the United States. Texas Governor Greg Abbott blamed President Joe Biden for the tragedy due to his "open border policies."
