Mexican Cyclist Édgar Cadena Embraces Road Racing for Freedom and Growth
Mexican cyclist Édgar Cadena, passionate about the freedom of road racing, aims to compete in major international tours, emphasizing hard work and perseverance over raw talent.
Édgar Cadena, one of the leading talents in Mexican cycling, has expressed his deep love for road racing, citing his affinity for freedom as the main reason for his choice. Unlike track cycling, which he finds restrictive, Cadena thrives on the open road despite the inherent challenges. His journey is not without its hurdles, but it is these challenges that make his story all the more inspiring.
“I love freedom; that’s why I’m a road cyclist. I suffer in my own way, and I wouldn’t enjoy being in a velodrome going in circles; besides, I’m not an explosive rider,” Cadena shared with Agencia EFE. This month, Cadena will compete in the Giro dell’Appennino in Italy and the Volta in Portugal, continuing his journey in the competitive road racing world.
At 23, Cadena has shown consistent growth year after year. Although he is not yet competing in the ‘UCI World Tour,’ he remains optimistic about his prospects. He dreams of participating in the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia, the Vuelta a España, and the Olympic Games, driven by his belief that perseverance and hard work will pave the way for success. His steady progress and ambitious goals are a testament to his dedication and the potential of Latin American cycling.
“Dreams are possible, and we must let the road put us in our place because things don’t happen overnight. Maybe I don’t have the raw talent of the young riders with high numbers, but I’m a progressive rider, and I work hard,” Cadena noted.
While Cadena is considered an all-around road cyclist, he particularly excels in time trials. His recent Vuelta a Colombia performance, where he finished seventh in the final mountain time trial against professional riders, showcased his strength in this discipline.
Rising Through the Ranks
Significant achievements have marked Cadena’s cycling journey. He is a two-time champion of the Vuelta a Salamanca, an amateur-level race. These victories paved the way for his participation in professional races as part of the Petrolike team. This team will see him compete in Italy and later in the Volta a Portugal, highlighting his steady ascent in the sport.
“In Mexico, there is talent, as we saw with Isaac del Toro, a rider who wasn’t well-known and won the Tour de l’Avenir without much support. The Mexican Federation is not recognized, and when it was, it formed the national team with its buddies,” Cadena remarked, shedding light on the challenges faced by Mexican cyclists in gaining recognition and support. Despite these obstacles, Cadena’s determination and resilience have seen him rise through the ranks of the cycling world.
Cadena’s journey into cycling began as a teenager when he participated in triathlons. Although he showed promise on the bike, his swimming skills were lacking, prompting him to focus solely on cycling. “I tried it and liked it. It’s a tough sport; the pain is soul-deep, but you train your mind to endure stage after stage,” he explained. In Mexico, Cadena is supported by the Sinergia Deportiva group, which has been instrumental in his development and growth as a cyclist.
Cadena’s story symbolizes the broader challenges Latin American cyclists face. Despite the region’s rich talent pool, structural issues and lack of support often hinder the progress of promising athletes. However, Cadena’s determination and resilience are a testament to the potential within Latin American cycling, a potential that, with the right infrastructure and support systems, could transform the sport in the region.
Cycling is not just a sport but a way of life in Latin America. It reflects the grit and determination of athletes who often must overcome significant obstacles to achieve their dreams. Cadena’s journey from a triathlete to a professional cyclist illustrates the passion and dedication required to succeed in this demanding sport. His story resonates with many young cyclists across the region who aspire to make their mark on the international stage.
The Road Ahead for Cadena
As Cadena prepares for the Giro dell’Appennino and the Volta a Portugal, he focuses on continuous improvement and seizing every opportunity to prove himself. These upcoming races are not just milestones in his career, but also crucial for the future of Mexican and Latin American cycling. His journey is about personal achievements and inspiring the next generation of cyclists, and these races could be the stepping stones to a brighter future for the sport in the region.
The upcoming races in Italy and Portugal will be crucial for Cadena’s development, providing him with the experience and exposure needed to compete at higher levels. His performance in these races will impact his career trajectory and highlight the potential of Mexican cycling on the international stage.
Cadena’s dedication to his craft and his unwavering belief in the power of hard work sets him apart. As he continues to push his limits and strive for excellence, his story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring cyclists across Latin America.
