Neither Roger Federer, nor Rafael Nadal, nor Serena Williams participated in this year's US Open. And it is that, as much as it costs us to admit it, these great tennis legends are already in the twilight of their careers. Federer recently turned 40, Nadal is 35 and Williams is 39.

As sad as his possible retirement is, we must not forget that there will always be a new generation of young tennis players ready to take the reins. Here at LatinAmerican Post, we want to talk to you about some of them.

Daniil Medvedev

The 25-year-old Russian is, at press time, the second-best player in the world behind the legendary Novak Djokovic. In 2021 he made history by being the first player not named Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, or Murray to reach second place in the world since 2005.

Despite his age, he has already achieved victories against Djokovic, Nadal, and Thiem. Throughout his career, he has won 12 titles, but his first Grand Slam still eludes him. So far, his best result came in this year's finals where he lost to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.

This year, Medvedev has a 40-10 record. Can he conquer his first Grand Slam and start his legend?

Dominic Thiem

If anyone can lift the world out of the shadow of Nadal and Federer, it is Austrian Dominic Thiem. The 27-year-old tennis player is currently sixth in the world and has won 17 titles throughout his career.

It also has a very important distinction. He is the only male tennis player born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam. He did it at the 2020 US Open, where he faced and beat German Alexander Zverev.

Thiem had already reached the end of a Slam three times and three times he had lost twice in France to Rafael Nadal and once in Australia to Djokovic. Given his age and experience, he could well dominate a post-Nadal / Federer world.

Naomi Osaka

A media giant, Osaka is, for many, the most popular tennis player in the world after the Williams sisters. And it's not for nothing. With four Grand Slams won at the age of 23, she sees an endless path for his career.

Osaka has remained among the top three tennis players in the world since 2019. She is also the first woman since Serena Williams to win consecutive individual Grand Slams.

It is worth noting that, like Williams, Osaka has a high degree of social conscience. During her career, she has stood out as an active voice for social causes in the United States, particularly Black Lives Matter.

A worthy successor, in every sense of the word.
