Unveiling Lunar Mysteries: A Breakthrough in Recent Lunar History
Existing chemical maps, primarily derived from lunar samples gathered during previous missions, provided information about the Moon's evolution up to 3 billion years ago. However, they fell short of encompassing more recent lunar history. This limitation is where the Chinese Chang'e-5 mission changed the game.
Lunar samples returned to Earth by the Chang'e-5 mission have yielded valuable information about relatively young volcanic activity dating back approximately 2 billion years. This treasure trove of samples contains compositions of materials distinct from those observed previously.
The research team achieved this breakthrough by employing a state-of-the-art approach, precisely estimating the contents of major elements on the lunar surface. They accomplished this by integrating data from Chang'e-5, Apollo, and Luna missions into a deep learning-based model.
Yang Chen's Insight: Unlocking Lunar Secrets
Yang Chen, an expert involved in the study, explained that their work allowed them to accurately measure the elemental content within rocks from lunar seas. This, in turn, provides reliable data for researching volcanic activity and thermal evolution on our satellite.
These newly acquired insights will prove invaluable for future lunar missions seeking to bring back more lunar rock samples, furthering our understanding of the Moon's history and geology, Yang added.
The findings from this groundbreaking research have been published in the scientific journal Nature Communications. The study represents a collaborative effort involving institutions such as Jilin University, the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the University of Trento in Italy, and the University of Iceland.
China's Lunar Exploration Odyssey
The most recent Chinese lunar probe, Chang'e 5, embarked on its lunar journey in 2020. During its mission, the spacecraft collected a remarkable 1,731 grams of lunar soil samples, marking a significant achievement in China's lunar exploration efforts.
China's lunar exploration program, named Chang'e in honor of a legendary Chinese Moon goddess, was inaugurated with the launch of its first lunar probe in 2007. Since then, Beijing has made substantial investments in its space program, achieving noteworthy milestones.

One of the program's crowning achievements was the successful landing of the Chang'e 4 spacecraft on the far side of the Moon in January 2019. This historic feat made China the first country to accomplish such a lunar landing, showcasing China's burgeoning capabilities in space exploration.
Looking Forward: A Promising Lunar Future
China's commitment to lunar exploration remains resolute, as it continues to push the boundaries of space exploration. The remarkable success of missions like Chang'e 5 underscores the nation's determination to unravel the Moon's secrets.
In the years ahead, as China and other nations intensify their lunar exploration endeavors, we can anticipate a wealth of scientific discoveries and a more comprehensive understanding of Earth's closest celestial companion. The Moon, once shrouded in mystery, is gradually revealing its past and its role in shaping our planet's history.
From unraveling volcanic activity to deciphering thermal evolution, the Moon's secrets are slowly being unveiled, thanks to the collaborative efforts of scientists and space agencies around the world. As we eagerly await the next phase of lunar exploration, we can look forward to a future where the Moon's mysteries become an integral part of our cosmic understanding.
