Mucormycosis, better known as Black Fungus, is a rare infection that has a mortality rate of 50% within the group of people who are infected, and it is dangerous especially for people who suffer from diabetes or who are immunosuppressed, such as those who have cancer or HIV / AIDS.
Although the Black Fungus has been known since before the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the last week an increase of hundreds of cases have been reported around the world, especially in India, where this week around 9,000 cases.

So far in Latin America only one case of Mucormycosis has been confirmed. This is a man under 50 with diabetes in Uruguay. Although no other cases have been registered, it cannot yet be confirmed that this is the first case in the region.
