Leer en español: Especial de Septiembre: películas sobre las amistades femeninas

We continue with our special of love and friendship. We want to recommend movies to see in September and that you can enjoy with your loves and your friends. After our list of friendship classics, we come to this one, specialized in female friendship. We do not believe that friendship between men is universal and that between women is particular. Rather, we believe that historically female friendships have been underrepresented in film and that on many occasions affective relationships between women are presented as mere enmity. That is why we have decided to make this new list to celebrate representations of the complexity of friendship between women.

Frances Ha, Noah Baumbach (2012)

A young contemporary dancer is facing adulthood in monstrous New York City. Her best friend has a partner and Frances, the protagonist, begins to feel more and more alone and lost with respect to her future . Shot in black and white, this is a film about youth, adulthood, questions about the future; but it is also about a friendship that comes and goes and that can sometimes be our only certainty. The glances of the friends meet at a party and Frances realizes that this is what she wants: company.

The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson, David France (2017)

This Netflix documentary follows the life and death of trans activist Marsha P. Johnson. Although the central theme of this documentary is not friendship, this will be its format, how is this? The feature film follows the issues of gay activism, the history of the pride march, the Stonewall party and the lives of young people on the New York docks who live on the streets. However, Marsha's story is told through the testimony of her friends. Thus, this is a documentary that portrays the friendship that lives on the margins, the communities that are formed in the outskirts of a city and of an entire society. It is a story of a friendship that is told to itself.

Fried Green Tomatoes, Jon Avnet (1991)

Two women remember in an old age a moment in their lives and a secret they keep. This secret will be that of their liberation and they share it in a complicity that only the women who have grown and aged in this town of the United States in which this story is set understand. It is a touching but also painful tale of crime and tears. It has the excellent performance of the beloved Kathy Bates.

Ema, Pablo Larraín (2020)

Also starring a dancer, like Frances Ha, and also about a conspiracy between women, like Fried Green Tomatoes, Ema is a rebellious portrait of female friendship. At first, one could say that the theme of the Chilean feature film is family or motherhood, since its protagonist has had to return the child she had adopted with her partner after a terrible accident. However, as the film progresses, we will see Ema dance with her friends, with whom through reggaeton and the conversations they have, they conspire to do what they think is right and win back her friend's son. Beautiful and fresh.

Bridesmaids, Paul Faig (2011)

To finish our list, a comedy, as they can never be missing. A group of friends must take charge of the bridesmaid tasks to celebrate the wedding of one of them, but the different moments of their life and their adulthood in which each one is hinder the process, but also cause very funny situations . With interpretations of great geniuses of American comedy. Bridesmaids laughs at the stereotype of enmity between women and celebrates the complexities of female friendship.
