There are only a few days left for France to be in the eye of all tennis lovers, as Roland Garros will begin this Sunday, the second Grand Slam of the current season. This tournament will not feature the current champion, Rafael Nadal, because the Spaniard wants to recover physically to compete in the best conditions.

Latin America will have several representatives both in the main draw of the ATP and WTA. In addition, there are several tennis players who compete in the qualifiers and seek to put their name on this Grand Slam. However, none are on the shortlist for this competition, in fact there is only one in the top 30 of the competition. Despite having little representation, the Latin American women tennis players at Roland Garros have two high-level players who can surprise.

WTA

Unlike the men's draw, in the women's branch there are fewer representatives from Latin America, since in the main phase only the Brazilian Maia Haddad appears, who is among the best 20 tennis players, and although she is not among the great favorites, she could surprise and arrive in the final stages of the tournament. Nadia Podoroska, from Argentina, is the other card that Latin American tennis has and who achieved her best result in a Grand Slam by reaching the semifinals of Roland Garros in 2021.

These two could be joined by the Colombians María Camila Osorio and Emiliana Arango, the Brazilian Carolina Meligeni and the Argentine María Lourdes, this will depend on the results that these athletes achieve in the qualifiers that take place during the week.

For this edition, the main casualties will be the aforementioned Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios, Matteo Berrettini and Pablo Carreño. Likewise, the favorites to win this championship are Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev.

On the female side, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur and Caroline Garcia are the main candidates to win the competition and today there are no notable casualties for the competition, so the best in the world will be in France disputing one of the most important world tennis tournaments.

Seven Argentines, two Chileans, a Colombian, a Peruvian, a Bolivian and a Brazilian will be the Latin Americans who will be in the main draw of the Grand Slam. On the side of Argentina, the country with the largest number of representatives, Sebastián Báez will be the main racket as he ranks 30th in the tournament, followed by Francisco Cerúndolo (32), Diego Schwartzman (48), the only one to reach the semifinals, Tomás Etcheverry (59), Pedro Cachín (69), Guido Pella (75) and Federico Coria (76).

The Chilean Nicolás Jarry, who is competing in the ATP in Geneva, seeks to arrive in France with the best feelings and try to surprise the competition with Cristian Garín. This athlete, in 2021, achieved his best result at Roland Garros by reaching the fourth round.

Daniel Galán will be the Colombian representative in this main draw and, unlike other editions, he will not have to play the qualifiers. His best result in Grand Slams was achieved for the first time in this tournament after advancing to the third round in 2020. On the other hand, Hugo Dellien, representative of Bolivia, will participate for the third time in France, a competition in which he failed to get past the second stage.

Among the Latin Americans there is the doubt of Juan Pablo Varillas, since the Peruvian who is classified for the tournament suffered a discomfort at the ATP in Lyon and withdrew to avoid a major injury and to definitely rule him out of Roland Garros. The Brazilian Thiago Monteiro will have his second participation in Paris and it will be the first time that he plays the same Grand Slam for the second time.It should be remembered that in the qualifiers are the Argentines Renzo Olivo, Andrea Collarini, Camilo Ugo, Santiago Rodríguez, Thiago Tirante, Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, Facundo Díaz, Juan Pablo Ficovich, Federico Delbonis and Genaro Olivieri. Next to them are the Brazilians Thiago Seyboth and Felipe Meligeni, as well as the Chilean Marcelo Barrios.
