Leer en español: Los mejores técnicos Latinos de este 2022
A year ends and with it balances are made again. The sports world is no exception, and this 2022 left numerous achievements for national teams and clubs. These are the best Latin technicians of the period that ends.
3 Latino coaches stood out for their role in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. Each of them with different goals and achievements, depending on the roster and soccer tradition. However, these 3 left a good impression and an excellent job. But there were also others who, both in South America and in Europe, showed great work and quality.
1. Leonel Scaloni
He is the driver of the "Scaloneta" , as the project of the Argentine team is known. He was the leader outside the field of champion Argentina. Despite his young age directing and his low profile, he has already won 1 Copa América, South American Qualifiers, a Finalísima Tournament and a World Cup. Of these, he won 3 and came in second in the heats.
But without a doubt, this year we cannot highlight any other more. Scaloni demonstrated exceptional group management and achieved what many other great and renowned coaches could not, crowned champion. Not only did he know how to get the best out of a Leo Messi in the final stretch of his best performance, Scaloni also had 2 great virtues: a good choice of group and empowering several players.
Today no one disputes Emiliano Martínez, Julián Álvarez, Enzo Fernández or Cristian "el Cuti" Romero, but all of them were approached or finished consolidating with the hand of Scaloni. Beyond Messi, he managed to form a great squad, giving important roles to legends like Pablo Aimar or Walter Samuel and even Sergio "el Kun" Agüero.
2. Gustavo Alfaro
Another great Argentine coach. Despite not having a large roster with Ecuador or having been eliminated in the World Cup groups, it would be unfair not to recognize Alfaro's work. Not only is responsible for the participation of Ecuador in the World Cup again, but he helps the selection to develop a style of play that put hosts Qatar, the Netherlands, and Senegal in trouble (winning, drawing, and losing 2-1). They definitely deserved a better result, but without a doubt, with more work and time, they will continue to build a robust, reliable team that does not give away a drop of dedication and football.
Despite being eliminated early in the quarter-finals, no one can deny that Brazil were far superior to most of their rivals. They beat Serbia and Switzerland without much fuss, their mixed roster (already classified) by little, and brought results to Cameroon. Later, Brazil won with South Korea in the quarterfinals. Everything indicated that Brazil and Argentina would define the pass to the final, but a Croatia that knew how to defend itself took the game to penalties. Unfortunately, for the cariocas, from 11 meters, it was the Balkans who had better precision and an inspired goalkeeper. But this does not take away from the great work that Tite has accomplished. Despite his departure from the canarinha, he was one of the best coaches in 2022.
The current champion of the Copa Libertadores. The coach born in Araquara gave his third Copa Libertadores to Flamengo, possibly the team with the largest fans in the entire continent. But it was not only the international title, Flamengo also won the Brazilian Cup and finished second in the brasileirao, the carioca championship and the Guanabara cup. This demonstrates the dominance of the whole of Rio de Janeiro.
5. Diego Simeone
To finish the list, the most successful South American coach in recent years in Europe cannot be missing: Diego Pablo Simeone. If it is true that, in its last seasons, the mattress team seems to have lost its level, ironically with greater investment, it is still competing. Last season they went back from 3 to just 2 points behind Barcelona and 15 behind the champion, Real Madrid.
Similarly, "Cholo" led the Madrid team to the quarterfinals of the Champions League last year. This, being second in the group of death that he shared with Liverpool, Porto, and Milan. They subsequently eliminated Manchester United and were left out, losing just 1-0 on aggregate against Manchester City. All this would be a dream season for a pre-Simeone Atlético de Madrid. Likewise, the specialized media FourFourTwo puts him in the 10th place of technicians in the world.
This list shows that Argentina and Brazil dominate South American football not only because of the quality of their players. These soccer superpowers also know how to produce numerous technicians.
A separate note for various Latin coaches such as Abel Ferreira from Brazil, Alberto Gamero, and Alejandro Restrepo from Colombia and Diego Cocca (Argentine champion in Mexico), among others. All of them, champions in their respective tournaments and leaving a good feeling.
